Outdoor Climbing — Weather and Season Guide
May 11, 2026
Outdoor climbing is completely different from indoors — no air conditioning, no artificial lighting, no guarantees beyond the weather forecast. Learning to read weather conditions is an essential skill for every outdoor climber.
Basic Weather Assessment
Temperature
| Range | Conditions | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 0-5°C (32-41°F) | Marginal | Numb fingers, best friction but uncomfortable |
| 5-15°C (41-59°F) | Optimal | Great friction, hands not cold — perfect for sending |
| 15-25°C (59-77°F) | Good | Warm but not hot, suitable for most climbing |
| 25-30°C (77-86°F) | Fair | Hands get sweaty, friction decreases |
| 30°C+ (86°F+) | Poor | Rock is hot to touch, heavy sweating — seek shade or climb early morning |
The best climbing temperature is typically 8-15°C (46-59°F) — cool enough for rubber to deliver maximum friction, but not so cold that you lose finger sensation.
Humidity
- Humidity >80%: Sweaty hands, possible condensation on rock, reduced friction
- Humidity <50%: Ideal
- Wind is your friend — even when it’s warm, wind helps evaporate hand sweat
Rain
Never climb on sandstone while it’s raining or wet! Wet sandstone loses significant strength, and holds can break — dangerous for both you and the rock.
Limestone and granite lose friction when wet, but at least they won’t be damaged as easily as sandstone.
How Long to Wait After Rain
| Rock Type | Wait Time After Rain | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Sandstone | 24-48 hours | Sandstone absorbs water and becomes brittle — wait until completely dry |
| Limestone | 2-6 hours | Good drainage, dries quickly, but seeping cracks take longer |
| Granite | 1-3 hours | Doesn’t absorb water; once the surface is dry, it’s good |
How to Check if Rock is Dry
- Press the back of your hand against the rock: if it feels cool and damp, wait
- Look at the color: wet rock is darker
- Check cracks and pockets: these dry last
Best Seasons for Major Chinese Crags
| Crag | Best Season | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Yangshuo | Oct-Dec, Mar-Apr | Best in winter with low humidity; summer is too hot and humid |
| Baihe (White River) | Apr-Jun, Sep-Nov | Climb shaded faces in summer; too cold in deep winter |
| Getu | Sep-Nov, Mar-May | Rainy and humid in summer |
| Liming | Oct-Dec, Apr-May | High elevation; cold in winter, rainy season in summer |
| Siguniang | Jun-Sep | High altitude — only summer is suitable |
| Kunming | Year-round | Mild climate; watch for summer rain |
Time of Day Strategy
- Summer: Early morning 6-10am or late afternoon 4-7pm. Avoid direct midday sun
- Winter: 10am-3pm. Wait for the sun to warm the rock
- Check the aspect:
- South-facing: Warm in winter
- North-facing: Cool in summer
- East-facing: Morning sun
- West-facing: Afternoon sun
Pre-Trip Checklist
- Checked two different weather forecasts (recommended: Windy, local weather apps)
- Confirmed no rain in the last 48 hours
- Confirmed crag aspect (pack appropriate layers)
- Brought enough water (outdoor climbing is more dehydrating than indoors)
- In summer: bug spray
- If cell signal is poor at the crag: downloaded offline maps and approach beta in advance
Safety Reminder
If the weather turns, retreat. No route is worth risking lightning or flash floods.
- Summer afternoons can bring sudden thunderstorms, especially in southern mountain areas (Yangshuo, Getu)
- If you see dark clouds gathering rapidly or hear distant thunder — descend immediately
- Canyon areas (like certain Getu sectors) may experience flash floods after heavy rain
- Tell someone not on the trip your plan and expected return time before you go
Enjoy outdoor climbing — the sun, the rock, the sound of wind. These are things a gym can never give you. But nature doesn’t joke around. Prepare well, know your limits.
